And we, as climate action leaders, are the guides. Roberts et al. (2021, p. 4) state that our brains work in two different manners, intuitive thinking and deliberative reasoning, with intuitive thinking comprising up to 95% of our actions. Each participant on this journey comes with varying personal and professional backgrounds which influence how they will intuitively react and deliberatively approach risk in this journey. How can one create an unbiased climate risk assessment when 95% of our actions are intuitive and not deliberative? This quandary increases the importance of guides, such as climate action leaders, to help safely reach the intended destination of unbiased climate risk assessment.

Initially, varying life experiences and privilege levels between those on this journey will change perceived risks for each individual, even though the river and associated hazards are the same. Those privileged enough to receive swimming lessons, who grew up around water activities, and those who have fond memories around water will intuitively view the river as less of a hazard and rank the risk lower. Whereas, those financially or physically underprivileged may have had opposite experiences and will intuitively view the river as more of a hazard and rank the risk higher. Similarly, personal and professional lifestyles can lead to differing assessments when it comes to assessing risk, despite the hazards and risks being identical. This difference in assessing risk is due to a differing sense of vulnerability and can be attributed to socioeconomic variables. Therefore, socioeconomic variables need to be taken into consideration as the marginalized, underprivileged, and physically or cognitively disadvantaged will be greater impacted with less ability to recover, increasing their intuitive perception of risk. Comparatively, those with privilege, strong social support systems, and good health will be impacted less due to a greater ability to recover, decreasing their intuitive perception of risk. Supporting this, Lempert (2021, p. 2) and Otto et al. (2017, p. 1652) found that varying socioeconomic factors change levels of social vulnerability and impacted the perceived risk with each hazard, more so when the socioeconomic factors were marginalization or financial disparity. So how does one overcome past or present life experiences to shift from intuitive to deliberative risk assessment when intuition naturally influences decisions and perceptions?

Intuition, like a river, is a powerful force that requires an exhausting amount of effort when trying to change course or counter its natural flow. A well-guided journey, taking the complex experiences of the participants into account, can help shift decisions from intuitive to deliberative. Instead of trying to find a middle ground, Roberts et al. (2021, p. 7) recommend finding a common ground to lessen the intuitive resistance towards change and allow deliberative reasoning to begin. Hine et al. (2015) support this approach by recommending the approach be reframed [common ground] not the issue at hand, to help avoid the risk of inaction [intuitive resistance]. To further this process, plain language should be used to help prevent intuitively misinterpreting terminology due to biased interpretations resulting from differing professional backgrounds (Roberts et al. (2021, p. 5-6), Bennet et al. (2021, p. 3)). Using plain language and finding common ground allows a bridge to be formed between climate action leaders and those participating in a risk assessment. In turn, creating a safe space where logical reasoning can take over and unbiased risk assessment can begin.

With tools to help guide intuitive thoughts instead of resisting them; logical reasoning becomes easier to utilize (Roberts et al, 2021, p. 5). Barriers, such as socio-economic variables, present themselves in different forms for each participant and will require tools such as plain language and a common ground approach to help overcome intuitive reactions and create deliberative actions. The use of these tools to create deliberative action, or paddle strokes, will help participants react to barriers, such as debris. As a result, deliberative actions having a common ground with intuitive reactions, paddle strokes working with the river currents, will help reach the intended destination with less resistance; an unbiased climate risk assessment.

References

Bennet, A., Hatch, C., Pike, C., Granados, M.
