I am not a writer, nor do I use this type of platform to share my opinions or knowledge. The thought of putting my personal thoughts and beliefs to paper or the digital world was rather scary, and I would prefer to do this in-person. But on second thought, to become a change leader one must put oneself out there for the world to see (or at least to the audience you want to inspire).

With this in mind, I wanted my first blog post to be about ‘openness’. I remember one of the questions that our instructors asked in a synchronous community building session was ‘What do you think when you hear the word openness?’ or something along those lines. My classmates and I threw out several other terms such as (if memory serves me) honesty, sharing, respectful, scary, free, etc. You may be questioning why our instructors would ask about openness. I was thinking this was about building our relationship as a cohort for the program.

Well, I was presently surprised to learn that the GC/MACAL program follows an openness education philosophy (Cox, n.d.). The Royal Roads University’s ‘Open Education Primer’ document describes what it means to have an open education. It links to a YouTube video by Dr. Robin DeRosa at Plymouth State University explains the three main concepts of an open education (pg. 2). Dr. DeRosa can explain better than I, but I will try to sum up the three concepts:

Open educational resources (OER): this is course material, including textbooks, that can be accessed and downloaded free of charge from the program website.

Open access: this is being able to access scholarly articles free of charge.

Open pedagogy: this is the ability for the learners to be able to help shape the course material for their respective programs, as well as sharing what they have learned throughout their programs with the public.

This idea of being able to share knowledge so freely and openly should be adopted at more schools and universities in my opinion. I also think that keeping the costs down for students so that more people can afford a higher education should be paramount. Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the lowest tuitions in Canada, however, it is, unfortunately, recommending a tuition fee hike (CBC News, 2021). Do not get me wrong, I was also skeptical at first. I am one of those people who like having the printed textbooks that I can put on my shelf and take down when needed. Plus, I have trouble reading from my screen and need that paper copy. But the value of having additional people having access to these programs and material far outweigh my selfish need for tangible materials.

I also see the open pedagogy like conducting research within my Indigenous communities. NunatuKavut Community Council has strived to ensure that any research in our territory is “driven by the needs, interests and priorities of Inuit communities in NunatuKavut” (NunatuKavut Community Council, n.d.). We ensure that our research is community-based and community-led. As students can inform and direct their course material so too the NunatuKavut Inuit can inform and direct research within their communities.

I now see the value of having student blogs and being able to share our learned knowledge with others. With having a time stamp for each blog post, we will be able to see the trajectory of our learning and which aspects will have the biggest impact. Our blog will be our ‘practice run’ to being a climate action leader (but it is still scary putting yourself out there).

References:

CBC News.
