Photo cred: DLM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few weeks before Christmas, Black Eyed Peas&#8217; original\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc\">&#8220;Where is the Love?&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 came on the radio in a moment of serendipity, as I was reflecting on the state of our world. With the news so full of hateful rhetoric, brutality, greed and protectionism, yes, where <em>is<\/em> the love?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one answer can be found in the digital world<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">. Easy access to social media networks via smartphones offers affordances that have changed our communications, as the challenges of time, place and space have been completely redefined.\u00a0 In 2009, Panayiota Tsatsou articulated the critical role of digital media in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/platformjmc.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/platformvol1_tsatsou.pdf\">challenging historically significant concepts of time and space<\/a>, changing how people shape their identities and extending the scope of physical and psychological mobility in today&#8217;s globalised world.&#8221;\u00a0 Current digital technologies are a much-used conduit for<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0conversations between like-minded individuals who can now easily find each other, through\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leadershipinstitute.org\/news\/?NR=13157\">geofilters<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0or simply searching a hashtag,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0anytime and anywhere, resulting in a social game-changer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Seeking out affinity groups and the sense of belonging they offer, supports identity-development and self-acceptance, whether the affinity is within, or outside of,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">dominant cultural norms (publics and counterpublics respectively).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Nia Cantey and Cara Robinson backed this up in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kobo.com\/ca\/en\/ebook\/hashtag-publics-1\">Hashtag Publics&#8217;\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peterlang.com\/view\/9781454192015\/chapter16.xhtml\">#BlackTwitter: Making Waves as a Social Media Subculture<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">where they stated &#8220;A large diverse society&#8230;contains many groups needing to compete and contest for power in a negotiated space&#8230;.Access to a space, or sphere, for the creation of identity is crucial.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/blacktwitter?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag\">#BlackTwitter,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/time-person-of-the-year-2017-silence-breakers\/\">#MeToo<\/a>, and the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metronews.ca\/news\/vancouver\/2018\/01\/20\/thousands-join-vancouver-women-s-march-on-day-of-protests-across-canada-u-s.html\">2018 Women&#8217;s March<\/a> are just a few examples of counterpublics living up to their <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/academia.edu.documents\/31775707\/PezzulloQJS.NBCAM.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIWOWYYGZ2Y53UL3A&amp;Expires=1516994109&amp;Signature=MZYINV0DK9aN30AH9L5NAs6RYpY%3D&amp;response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DResisting_national_breast_cancer_awarene.pdf\">twofold potential for empowerment and critique.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 3317px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/20\/2018_Women%27s_March_NYC_%2800079%29.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3317\" height=\"3456\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 3317px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 3317\/3456;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">2018 Women&#8217;s March NYC. By Rhododendrites (Own work) [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0)], via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>Digital spaces are also where like-minded individuals such as self-professed nerds (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/nerdlife?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag\">#nerdlife<\/a>), writers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/writersofinstagram\/?hl=en\">#writersofinstagram<\/a>), or Justin Bieber fans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/search\/beliebers%20in%20the%20world\">#beliebers<\/a>), connect to feel supported, accepted, and yes,\u00a0<em>loved<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But, in our attention-deficit, information-overloaded lives, it&#8217;s not surprising that our seemingly human desire to label, categorize and generalize kicks in.\u00a0 The difficulty is that these strategies all too often result in a &#8220;single story&#8221; stereotype, as shared by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in her powerful TedTalk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"739\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D9Ihs241zeg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The danger lies not only in the overly simplistic view, but also its laser-focus on difference, at the expense of how we might be similar.\u00a0 As Adichie points out, every time we tap into a label, a stereotype, or a &#8220;single story&#8221; for understanding, we rob people of dignity.\u00a0 None of us are comprised of a single story, and I would suggest\u00a0<em style=\"font-size: 1rem\">everyone<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">(no matter our race, gender, age or religion)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">can recall coming up against a prevalent stereotype being applied to us, or our choices, and how that felt. Yet, despite this lived experience, we continue to &#8220;single-story&#8221; others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By its very definition, the broadly espoused concept of diversity emphasizes difference.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Even our Prime Minister, who speaks proudly of Canada&#8217;s diversity, might be seen as struggling with how to apply the concept, reflected in <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/can-justin-trudeau-tolerate-real-diversity\/article37665145\/\"><span style=\"background: white\">this Globe &amp; Mail opinion piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> (looking beyond the specific content, it begs the question of <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem\">who decides<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> what is, or is not, included in our view of diversity?).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Could this emphasis on difference &#8211; between various publics and counterpublics &#8211; be helping to make needed and important headway for equality and social justice, while simultaneously creating deeper divides between peoples?\u00a0 Are the affordances of the internet, for the purposes of the public sphere(s), inadvertently contributing to the deepening polarization and entrenchment we are witnessing today?
