In some ways it is similar to a focus group, but it allows you to host more participants at once, and it facilitates large group dialogue on a topic. This makes it ideal for public engagement.<\/p>\n<p>See the World Caf\u00e9 Method Webpage for a thorough overview of this method: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theworldcafe.com\/key-concepts-resources\/world-cafe-method\/\">World Caf\u00e9 Webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Why use world caf\u00e9?<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>This approach is interactive and fun for participants.<\/li>\n<li>It is particularly useful for idea generation in a casual setting.<\/li>\n<li>The format encourages open and diverse participation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Properties of World caf\u00e9:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Uses a tightly-controlled format to encourage open discussion and generate a wide variety of perspectives.<\/li>\n<li>Participants engage in a group discussion in a format intended to maximize participant comfort in order to generate ideas from the participant.<\/li>\n<li>Thus, it tends to be quite useful for public engagement where perspectives from many stakeholders are sought.<\/li>\n<li>Principles: The originators of this approach list 7 important design principles:\n<ol>\n<li>Set the context.<\/li>\n<li>Create a hospitable space.<\/li>\n<li>Explore questions that matter.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage everyone\u2019s contributions.<\/li>\n<li>Connect diverse perspectives.<\/li>\n<li>Listen together for patterns and insights.<\/li>\n<li>Share collective discoveries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Environment: It is recommended that the room for data collection be set up like a caf\u00e9, with tablecloths and centrepieces on tables, and with posters around the room which remind participants of the following:\n<ol>\n<li>focus on what matters,<\/li>\n<li>listen to understand,<\/li>\n<li>contribute their thinking,<\/li>\n<li>speak their minds and hearts,<\/li>\n<li>link and connect ideas,<\/li>\n<li>listen together for insights and deeper questions,<\/li>\n<li>write and draw on the \u2018tablecloths&#8217;, and<\/li>\n<li>have fun.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Collecting Data Using World Caf\u00e9:<\/h5>\n<p>This video from Florida State College provides a good overview of running a World Caf\u00e9 (5 mins):<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"World Cafe Guidelines &amp; Principles\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YrTKD8NpApY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A successful world caf\u00e9 requires the environment above, plus several key participants. It follows a specific process aimed at helping participants open up, feel comfortable and take an active role in dialog.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Key roles:\n<ol>\n<li>The client.<\/li>\n<li>The facilitator.<\/li>\n<li>Presenters.<\/li>\n<li>Hosts.<\/li>\n<li>Paricipants<\/li>\n<li>A graphic recorder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Process:\n<ol>\n<li>Facilitator introduces the process, and guides timing and movement.<\/li>\n<li>Presenters provide short introductions to a series of \u201cpowerful questions\u201d (limited to 5 minutes).<\/li>\n<li>Hosts are present at each table.<\/li>\n<li>Participants move between tables at the allotted times to engage in various conversations.<\/li>\n<li>The graphic recorder observes and records the event in graphic form.<\/li>\n<li>Usually there are 3-4 cycles of table conversation on key questions following each 5 minute presenter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tips from the Professor:<\/strong> While world caf\u00e9 in some ways has the properties of a focus group, it can be run with a much larger group. That said, it takes more people to run a successful world caf\u00e9.
