Introducing New Moodle (3.2)
The RRU Learning Management System (LMS) is a customized version of Moodle, an open source learning platform which is updated twice a year. As Royal Roads is committed to keeping our LMS up to date, we also upgrade on the same bi-annual schedule. Doing so ensures that our LMS is secure, robust, and has the latest features and functionality. Upgrade-related changes to Moodle are often subtle and focused on technical issues, usually going unnoticed by the users of Moodle.
However, unlike regular upgrades, the upgrade to Moodle 3.2 will bring noticeable changes related to a new theme, navigation changes, video integration, Collaborate, as well as a few additional changes to Moodle functions. These changes are primarily aimed at improving the experience for students and instructors, making Moodle more accessible, especially from mobile devices.
We invite the RRU community to explore this info-site, which we have put together as a preview into the changes to come with the upgrade to Moodle 3.2 in June, 2017.
Moodle 3.2 brings a long overdue theme upgrade named Boost, which gives Moodle a fresh new look. Boost is similar in functionality to the theme currently used at RRU, but improves navigation and is designed to offer a better user experience for everyone, especially on mobile devices.
Users will noticed a few changes in how they navigate around Moodle after the June 27 upgrade. These changes are intended to make navigation easier on both desktop and mobile devices.
With the upgrade to Moodle 3.2, we are able to offer a range of new features related to assignments, forums, etc.
The upgrade to Moodle 3.2 will bring about changes related to how instructors and students share videos and other multimedia in Moodle.
In order to promote and facilitate the use of video, we will be providing easy-to-use tools, including: simple workflows to publish; a centralized video system; and, a video solution that is integrated into Moodle. These tools and services will be provided with the Moodle-integrated Kaltura video platform.
Many of the members of the RRU community will be familiar with Moodle Collaborate rooms. Collaborate is a real-time video conferencing tool with many features that allow interactive online facilitation.
The upgrade to Moodle 3.2 will include the introduction of Collaborate Ultra, the next generation online classroom software from Blackboard, representing a long-awaited update to the user interface.
The upgrade to Moodle 3.2 will bring additional changes to features including course admin/program pages, course archiving, plug-ins, etc.
