{"id":329,"date":"2018-02-13T09:32:38","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T17:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webspace.royalroads.ca\/s1harper\/?p=329"},"modified":"2018-03-07T20:43:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T04:43:43","slug":"forest-for-the-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webspace.royalroads.ca\/s1harper\/forest-for-the-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Nuggets and Long Tails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe width=\"739\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HxP3t4J_7ew?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cumberlandforest.com\/\">Cumberland Community Forest<\/a> is the most profound personal example I have of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/sections\/resources-different-audiences\/civil-society\/\">civil society<\/a> in action. &#8216;On the ground&#8217; activism, on-line engagement,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interpersonal_ties\">strong ties<\/a> of community, the weak ties of visitors and tourists, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2004\/10\/tail\/\">long tail<\/a> of social media came together to create change. Without all of these layers of engagement, the forest would not still stand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/author\/jonah-lehrer\/\">Jonah Lehrer<\/a>\u00a0states in his article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/09\/weak-ties-twitter-and-revolutions\/\">Weak Ties Twitter and Revolutions<\/a>\u00a0the internet cannot provide the &#8220;discipline and strategy&#8221; necessary to politically engage civil society &#8211; this must come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestudentroom.co.uk\/showthread.php?t=345521\">social actors<\/a> working directly on the ground. However, he also argues that innovation created by the interaction of diverse parties via the internet is an important aspect of civil engagement.<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0&#8220;Our acquaintances \u2014 not our friends \u2014 are our greatest source of new ideas and information&#8221; he argues, and I can see how this concept at play in the growing &#8216;<\/span>friends&#8217;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0and connections of the Cumberland Forest; the voice and reach of the project was broadened and emboldened by the &#8216;clickers&#8217; of the digital sphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cumberland.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LJ_20150920-P9203162MountainBike1-672x504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"203\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 271px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 271\/203;\" \/>\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trailforks.com\/region\/cumberland-forest\/map\/\">Cumberland Forest<\/a>\u00a0is the story of a community who reimagined its prosperity through forest preservation. Primarily championed by residents attempting to strike a new economic path out of the end of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timescolonist.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/comment-let-s-face-it-end-of-old-growth-logging-is-near-1.23068826\">old growth logging<\/a>, the spin off created by digital technologies\/social media have been strikingly effective. The forest has become a symbol of a mountain biking\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jerrymclaughlin\/2011\/12\/21\/what-is-a-brand-anyway\/#77db7d892a1b\">brand<\/a>\u00a0or social positioning. Powerful twitter hashtags build narratives that feature community&#8217;s shared identity: Political &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/search?q=%23restorethecommons&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj3n56ysKPZAhVCLmMKHcZNA6EQsAQIVA&amp;biw=1207&amp;bih=596\">#restore the commons<\/a> &#8211; relating to the reemergence of the private versus public ethic in reclaiming crown land; Consumer &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingmagazine.ca\/spotlight\/watering-hole-riders-rides\/\">#buyabeersaveaforest<\/a> &#8211; launched by the local brewery which donates a dollar from each beer; and Historical &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/gingergoodwin\">#whatwouldgingerdo<\/a> &#8211; in reference to labour hero &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timescolonist.com\/the-life-and-death-of-ginger-goodwin-martyr-or-myth-1.2012002\">Ginger Goodwin&#8221;,<\/a> who led the town through the <a href=\"http:\/\/take5.ca\/web-extra\/rob-johnson\/great-coal-miners-strike\/\">Great Coal Mining Strike of 1912.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A possey of German and Australian mountain bikers rode the perseverance trail wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the face of Ginger Goodwin and slogans declaring the Republic of Cumberland; how incredibly heart-warming. There is a whole linkage of weak ties fostering the forest preservation project of this tiny rural village of 3000. We are truly connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/livinginternet.com\/i\/ii_mcluhan.htm\">Global village<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/harmonicarts.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/website-capture-1024x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"180\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 352px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 352\/180;\" \/>\u00a0Some argue that clicking on a social cause can be more of an escape, a mirage of political engagement, which creates a placebo effect that inoculates us from further activism. They call it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slacktivism\">slacktivism.<\/a>\u00a0However, I think the Cumberland Forest shows that we can be more hopeful for the clickers. Others have argued that abstracted on-line engagement can stimulate more meaningful action. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirky.com\/\">Clay Shirky&#8217;s<\/a> notion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/clay_shirky_how_cognitive_surplus_will_change_the_world\">cognitive surplus<\/a> is just one example; Shirky expounds that\u00a0&#8220;while we&#8217;re busy editing Wikipedia, posting to Ushahidi (and yes, making LOLcats), we&#8217;re building a better, more cooperative world&#8221;. The internet relies on a certain amount of human generosity to motivate change. Moreover, I think the Cumberland Forest exemplifies the kind of hope we can have in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/LiamFlan93\/advantages-of-the-long-tail\">long tail of social connection<\/a>\u00a0and the interaction of diverse social ties. Without the momentum created by social media and the growing number of tweets or on-line media presence, the Cumberland Forest would not have gained enough momentum to sustain fundraising efforts, reach granting bodies, and stir its array of social engagement.<\/p>\n<p>I think we can find our physical feet in our digital universe; we just need to get our mitts in there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cumberland Community Forest is the most profound personal example I have of civil society in action. &#8216;On the ground&#8217; activism, on-line engagement,\u00a0the\u00a0strong ties of community, the weak ties of visitors and tourists, and the long tail of social media came together to create change.
