\"\"I must admit to reading this book with some trepidation. As a university administrator (and male) I expected to come out of this read feeling pretty bad about myself. As it turned out this was only partially true.<\/p>\n

For those that have not read this book by Maggie Berg and Barbara Seeber, it is worth a read and despite the title is very accessible and a quick read. The book, at its heart, is about the increasing stress on the university professor and they offer ample evidence that this is the case. Blame is placed fairly squarely on the masculine corporatization of the university. I do take some umbrage with this but again they offer some well cited evidence. There is no doubt that the demands of the university on all members of staff and faculty seem to be increasing not decreasing.<\/p>\n

The result, not enough time to all the things that need doing equals long hours, guilt, stress and general unhappiness. For solutions they turn to the slow food movement for inspiration. While some of their musings seem to long for a time long gone and one that will probably never return, they do have some very keen observations.<\/p>\n

Work-life balance – everyone talks about what a good thing it is but very few people do it or model it for others. Those that do are sometimes racked with guilt. I completely agree with the authors on this front – this has to change. We all need to model good behaviours and all the research tells us that productivity and happiness with increase.<\/p>\n

Take time to prepare and enjoy teaching and move away from publish or perish to thoughtful and impactful research and lastly come into work and talk to your colleagues.<\/p>\n
