Royal Roads is probably best described as an interdisciplinary social science university. The university is organized by schools that group together various programs within a general theme. As such, one could say that there are no disciplines, disciplinary expertise is present within the schools but not within traditional departments. The university is relatively new (1995) and was born into the internet age and as a consequence an early adopter of technology for on-line learning. Programs are offered in a variety of modes from full to face to face to fully on-line with the majority offered by blending these two formats in a hybrid model. Our programs tend to attract a more mature and focussed student.
The university takes pride in a sophisticated learning and teaching framework that guides the construction of programs and courses resulting in a transformative educational experience for students. Faculty are active researchers and the university encourages interdisciplinarity in teaching and research through a college of interdisciplinary studies.
