If you live in Victoria like me, this news may interest you. Especially if you are working or living anywhere close to the inner harbour.
A project that involves remedying the Laurel Point Park and sections of the David Foster Habour Pathway is happening this October. This is a big project that the City of Victoria and Transport Canada has been working on in order to clean out the contaminated soil at the site. The reason why this is happening is because back in the 1900s, Laurel Point was home to a paint factory which belonged to the British American Paint Company; during the time from 1906 to 1975 when the paint factoru was operating, there was a large amount of unknown materials infilled the site. After numerous assessments and investigation, the Victoria Middle Harbour Fill Site is classified as contaminated; therefore, by launching this project, 35000 cubic metres of contaminated soil between the Inn at Laurel Point and the seawall will be replaced with clean soil. Even though the contamination does not risk the health of park users, it is necessary that the well-being of marine wildlife and  ecosystem is protected for a sustainable future of the inner harbour.
